An Examination at Every Port

Here's how I see the 911 commission's recommendation that we examine every cargo container entering this country. As I understand it, the major objection to this is the prohibitive cost, yes? (HOW much are we spending in Iraq again?) Let's look at it this way: We create a new government agency to oversee and administer the inspection program. How many jobs does this create? (answer: a lot) Still, the initial expenditure would be enormous. So what say we pass the cost on to all the international companies that are importing all this stuff. Countries like China, for instance. ( Yes, it would be a lot, and yes, that is the point) Well gee, you say, wouldn't said countries immediately raise the cost of their goods to compensate? How could the American companies purchasing all these products possible afford the increase? What would they do. Well, perhaps they would return to the practice of purchasing components and materials and products that are manufactured right here in America. Demand for domestic manufacturing would skyrocket. How many more jobs would this create, recreate and restore? While we're at it, tell China that we will no longer allow their exports into this country until they eliminate the artificial matching of the yen to the dollar. Once again, America could take her place as a self-sustaining country. If there is a problem with this idea then I would love to hear it.
